Steve’s Shop

The original workshop, which was attached to the house, was converted into a cozy living space when Grandma Evelyn came to live here in 2013. That’s the Guest Suite now. Her arrival necessitated a new space to be built for the shop, so Steve and Janet, always eager to try new building techniques, designed a stone and straw bale structure with vaulted ceilings and a small loft.

Central to the space is the wood stove. The bronze dodo bird holding a stick of dynamite and matches adorns the heat source along with, literally, all the bells and whistles, an ode to Steve’s playfulness and way of making that which would otherwise be simply utilitarian into a work of art.

In the middle of the room is his 8’ x 4’ wooden workbench which tells the story of projects past and stands ready to welcome the spills and dings of new work.
